Cochran family papers, 1752-1814.

Papers conisist of copies of correspondence, memoirs (typescript copies and one handwritten) of Colonel Charles B. Cochran (1766-1833), a biographical sketch of Captain Robert Cochran, and genealogical material pertaining to the Cochran family. Family correspondence (1752-1814) includes typescript copies of several letters from Mary Cochran (d. 1829) to her sons Charles B. Cochran and Robert Elliott concerning the British occupation of Charleston (S.C.) in 1780, Robert Cochran's confinement at St. Augustine (Fla.), Charles' schooling at Passy near Paris (France), and other matters. A letter (15 January 1779) to Robert Cochran from Babut & Laboucher at Nantes (France) discusses a shipment of indigo and relates news of his son Charles. A letter (25 March 1782) to Robert Cochran from the Baron de Holtzendorff concerns financial help which Charles B. Cochran received from the Marquis de Lafayette, and other matters. A letter (1752) from Artemas Elliott to his daughter "Polly" discusses his escape from a Sullivan's Island (S.C.) house blown down by a hurricane. There are photographs of two letters. One letter (12 June 1779) from Benjamin Franklin to Captain (Robert) Cochran concerns his son Charles B. Cochran; a letter (18 July 1814) from John Quincy Adams to Charles B. Cochran in Charleston (S.C.) concerns old schoolmates of theirs whom Adams met in St. Petersburg (Russia), and diplomatic affairs in Gothenburg (Goteburg), Sweden.
